- You know it's been a good week for stupid Republican stories when it starts with Rep. Michael Grimm defending himself against an investigation into accepting illegal cash campaign donations by saying: “Not only are they saying I’m a criminal, they’re saying I’m a very stupid criminal. Everyone knows that that building is under surveillance for blocks. So why would I go where there’s surveillance to do a criminal act? That’s why I’m saying it’s preposterous.” Ah yes, the classic "I'd have to have been a complete idiot to get caught so easily" defense. I don't see that one working for him, do you?
- Meanwhile the Religious Right is claiming that the upcoming The Lorax movie violates the Separation of Church and State because environmentalism is a religion.
- You may remember Keith Ablow as the whackjob psychiatrist who wrote the instant classic article: "Newt Gingrich's Three Marriages Mean He Might Make a Strong President -- Really." He may have managed to top himself though by attacking the founder of Media Matters for being adopted. Literally: "He’s a dangerous man, because having followers and waging war… this isn’t accidental language. It’s about violence, destruction, and he feels destroyed in himself. [...] This is an adopted boy who needs to plumb the depths of his psyche. He was adopted. Many adopted children are tremendously well-adjusted, but for some reason, this man feels he’s unloved and unloveable, shunted to the side, and that’s the antidote he feels: unlimited power. Guess what? It never ever works."
- Oregon State Senator Brian Boquist is being sued by his business partners for embezzling thousands of dollars from their survivalist training camp. Just as a general life lesson, it's probably best not to piss of survivalists with access to military grade hardware.
- Another survivalist, this time a "sovereign citizen" in Washington, has filed a lawsuit accusing federal prosecutors and Department of Homeland Security officials of violating his civil rights through “babbling-collusion-threats” and “grammar-second-grade-writing-level-fraud.” The rest of the insanity really is worth taking a look at.
- In the next few days we're going to be hearing a lot about the illegal immigrant who attempted to suicide bomb the Capitol Building today. Two facts to remember: 1. President Obama's Justice Department was on top of the situation from day one, and there was never any chance he would have pulled it off. 2. An anti-immigrant extremist tried to pull the exact same thing in Kansas on Wednesday, and you didn't hear anything about it.
- In less depressing news, Sarah Palin has announced she would consider running for President if the Republicans end up with a brokered convention. So that's just hilarious.
- Finally, let's take a look at the failure that is the Mitt Romney for President Campaign and what they've been up to this week:
- A top advisor admitted that Romney's just pandering to the base about all the social issue stuff they care about and will drop it as soon as he gets the nomination. Another word for that would be lying.
- They sent campaign surrogate Former Senator Jim Talent to attack Santorum for voting for Medicare Part D when.....Talent also voted for Medicare Part D.
- He signed a Religious Right pledge to "reduce the proliferation of pornography" but then refused to return the donations he's received from hardcore pornographers.
- He also announced he doesn't want to do any more Presidential debates, presumably because he gets humiliated in them.
- When asked what happens if he loses Michigan, Romney responded "that won't happen." So remember that's the bar he set, because he's currently down by 15 to Rick Santorum.
- He did win a quasi-endorsement from Grover Norquist, who said that Romney has "enough working digits to handle a pen" and that's all you really need since a Republican President is just going to rubber stamp whatever insane gibbersh a Republican Congress comes up with.
