- Now, I've already touched on Ann Romney's faux outrage before, but then she goes and says something new: After giving a moving speech about how she knows what it's like to go grocery shopping and do the laundry for her kids, Mrs. Romney added, “I love the fact that there are women out there who don’t have a choice and they must go to work and they still have to raise the kids. Thank goodness that we value those people too. And sometimes life isn’t easy for any of us.” Now putting aside the fact that I'm not entirely sure mothers not having a choice but to go to work is something anyone should "love," I just want to call out her saying "we value those people" except of course in anyway that involves giving them money or support to make things easier for them. And while it's true that "sometimes life isn't easy for any of us," I'm really not sure at this point that the Romneys have any idea how and why it's not easy for most of us.
- Now while Democrats are working to pass legislation like the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to try and close the wage gap, Republicans have a different plan to solve that problem: deny it even exists.
- Republican Senate Candidate in Missouri Sarah Steelman, who last week didn't know what the Violence Against Women Act was, now has an explanation for that ignorance. Democrats are just using the Violence Against Women Act "to distract from the real problems that are facing our nation." Now you might be wondering if domestic violence isn't a "real problem" to Republicans, what is? Helpfully House Republicans have let us know in their version of the Violence Against Women Act, apparently the real problem is that we don't inform the abuser when their victim goes to the police in cases where the abuser could have their victim deported by divorcing them. Because what could possibly go wrong there?
- Republican Minnesota State Senator Paul Gazelka thinks it's absurd to compare hormonal birth control to viagra: it's "comparing apples and oranges or more like comparing life and death.Viagra is a wonderful medical advancement in that can help couples with sexual disfunction issues...it can even help in producing life." Just ask all of Rush Limbaugh's kids.
- Finally, abstinence only advocates are angry that the CDC is crediting comprehensive sex education classes for the lowest teen pregnancy rate in more than 70 years while at the same time pointing out that the rate is higher in states that only teach abstinence. But Leslee Unruh, the founder of the Abstinence Clearinghouse, has another reason why it's important to teach abstinence only: "All the data is there, and it is time for everybody to recognize it, both in the church and in the public sector that you know what, the church ladies are having the best sex!" Which is true, as long as you define "the best sex" as missionary with the lights off only for procreation. Otherwise maybe the Religious Right should stay out of everyone's bedrooms.
